Subject of Proclamation or Commendation Mary Alice Brown: She has shared her love of music with all ages and races. She has entertained with many enthusiastic audiences of all ages and backgrounds, from night clubs to schools, theatres, and churches. She is a women that takes nothing for granted.
Background or description of person or organization Mary Alice was born, educated, and piano-trained in Erie. Her advanced piano education took place at the Erie Conservatory and Mercyhurst college. After that she learned from the great pianists and singers of the period, such as Billie Holiday. In her Erie days, she could be found performing at the various, clubs, hotels, auditoriums and any other place where she would attract an audience,
Description of program, initiative, or accomplishment In her early years she stared a music school the JFK Center. Although a seasoned traveler, having lived in Japan, the West Coast, and Hawaii, she always called Erie her home. She and continues sharing her gift of music for varied audiences. She was on the founding board of the Erie Jazz Society and dedicated herself to teaching and mentoring many young local musicians. Now in her nineties, she is still has great spirit and amazing energy.
Explanation of how this person or organization impacts the Erie community Mary Alice was a strong supporter of music training, especially for the young. She was known to have given free lessons to those unable to pay. At the end of her stay in Hawaii, Then Mayor Joyce Savacchio told her it was time for her to come back to Erie...and in 1992 she did. She was needed to bring back jazz.
