PROCLAMATION DETAILS

Subject of Proclamation or Commendation Harry T. Burleigh Day
Background or description of person or organization December 2nd is the 153rd anniversary of the birth of Erie Native Son and African-American, Harry Thacker Burleigh (1866-1949) an international treasure and local exemplar of cultural and artistic success.
Description of program, initiative, or accomplishment The December 2019 Burleigh Celebration begins with the City’s designation of December 2, 2019 as H.T. Burleigh Day and culminates in the unveiling of a newly revised PMHC historical marker at Sixth and French Streets, which restores the full measure of Burleigh’s heritage as an African-American, Erie-born, titan of American cultural arts. The marker erected in the 1950’s shows an inscription that was edited to exclude the word Negro and erase Burleigh’s ethnicity from public acknowledgement; this effort attempts to redress that error and point to Erie’s long-inclusive history.
Explanation of how this person or organization impacts the Erie community Burleigh Legacy Advocates are seeking a December 2nd Burleigh Day proclamation from the City of Erie to commemorate his birthday and raise awareness of his legacy in the Erie region. Burleigh Legacy Advocates will collaborate with the City to provide Burleigh content and educational materials that meet the City’s communications and media strategies.
